Wanted Dead And Alive?

August 10, 2017

“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.  Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.  Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness.  For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.”  Romans 6: 11-14

Grace always empowers and motivates us to make better choices in life.  Our day to day choices are what make up the very fabric of our lives.  Every day we have the option of being dead to sin or allowing sin to control and distort our lives.  When we choose to reckon ourselves dead to sin…that is when we are most alive in Christ.  As we become more and more mature in our faith making the best right choices should get easier, but sometimes we all still get greatly tempted to enter into wrongdoing or sin.  Even a mature Jesus was tempted by satan.  So never make the mistake of thinking you are somehow beyond being tempted to stray from Christ’s straight and narrow way.

If we truly walk fully in the grace provided for us by the Lord… sin will not be our master.  This is accomplished by continually being led by the Holy Spirit and not giving into our flesh or carnal reasoning.  Some try to be bible led in their walk and many times this leads to having some sense of the Law being able to keep us from sin.  This is a HUGE mistake! Confidence in our own knowledge, interpretation skills and understanding of what is written often only leads to pride and that pride can lead to destruction.  However, if we instead live and walk fully in the Spirit we will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.  Sure use the bible as the Spirit leads you, but avoid using it according to your own intellect, understanding and flesh.

If the Church would only respect and recognize that we are totally under grace and not the Law anymore, She would indeed be glorious and a safe haven to all.  Mixing the Law with Grace leads to much confusion and destruction in the lives of those seeking justification via the written code.  Trying to live under any component of the Law denies Christ and the work He completed and accomplished on the cross.  It is ONLY by grace that we have been saved. The only way to walk in such amazing grace is under the Headship of Lord Jesus via the leading of the Holy Spirit.  For any part or portion of the Letter kills, but only the Spirit gives life and complete Spiritual nourishment that benefits not only us, but also those we are in fellowship with along the way.

“Confidence in our own knowledge…… and understanding …. often only leads to pride and that pride can lead to destruction.” Might both your original comment, and this exerpt, be equally true? Perhaps.

    • Yes Tom perhaps.

    • Well, I have to admit I have no idea who Wesley is but in my journey in the Lord there are many times as the Spirit has taken me a step forward It has been in strong contrast to my experience and tradition so it definitely was not in harmony. Or even with my then understanding of scripture it would seem to be in contrast until I got quiet before Him and realized it was my understanding that needed adjusting. Then my experience could come into agreement. Hoping this makes sense. And of course, ANY understanding held in the flesh and puffing us up is pride and destructive. Amen to that. It is why being sensitive to the nudge or speaking of the Spirit becomes so very important. I always appreciate your sharing……love, “BK”

      • Thank you for sharing BK. It looks like you are signed into my wordpress account so it looks like this post came from me. When you get a chance please sign out of wordpress?

Thus, Wesley’s quadrilateral… scripture, experience, reason, tradition. All should be in harmony.

Christopher, the nourishment we got from your life of grace and love testimony still brought tears to Frank’s eyes as he retold , briefly, the testimony you shared At the Searching Together event. It was rich with love. No letter of the law there. A confirmation of what u r saying here. You didn’t preach love, you gave love, to your competitor over the years till LOVE BROKE THROUGH, as Phil Keaggy sang well years ago.

    • Thank you Sue. It is amazing that you quote that song. “Until YOur Love Broke Through” was written by my friend Randy Stonehill, Keith Green and Todd Fishkind in part about my life. Right after my father hit me in the head with a shovel and left me for dead on the side of the road. Randy and I are still friends, but I only met Keith and Todd the one time. Keith prophetized over me that I would be an radical agent of change in the Body of Chirst as I grew older. I was only 13 at the time. Thanks for sharing Sue.

Wow. Cool story. It’s a small world. Way back in the Jesus movement, God was making it plain through Keith’s prophesy to you that He intended to do things differently than the status quo of the last two millennia. How sweet to be handpicked by Him toward that end. Actually, we all are. May we all find our place in this endeavor as led by the Spirit.

      • Thank you for sharing Dan. The Lord uses all of us in a plethora of wonderful ways.

Am still seeing some academic theory mind tangle here. The law, better understood as- Gods Way does not change, as he does not change ( we think) You do know you still cant kill each other, cant steal from each other. Universal truth is STILL true. What has changed is we are no longer ” under the law” – hopelessly crushed. “killed” by inability to keep it. He always knew we NEEDED the gift of his own spirit to ” follow it” to live it, and of course, go far beyond minimum donts to the go and dos.

    • THank you for sharing Rich. The Letter kills, but the Spirit gives life!

Hi, Rich. I like to think of ‘the law’ as we know it now as a description of God and His love. No longer do we ‘keep’ it with fear of death but it is a NATURE that is who we are now. Not obeying rules written from without, but a living of life from within. A huge difference. Colossians has it nailed to the cross, crucified with Christ. A new covenant of life has replace the old covenant of law. Just some thoughts that are important to my walk. Love and thank you for your input….we may be saying the same thing. Love, “BK”
