Battlefield Mind

February 3, 2017
Greetings,
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”  2 Corinthians 10: 5
I don’t know about everybody else, but sometimes my mind is a battlefield.  Many times there are competing images and thoughts vying for my attention.  And not all of these thoughts are wholesome or productive.
Sometimes the enemy or my flesh will bring to my mind pornography I viewed many, many years ago.  Add to that all my memories of being sexually, physically and emotionally abused and I have a lot of negative things that try to dominate my thoughts.  Then there is the fact of how we are continuously barraged by the secular media with less than wholesome images.  All this and more add up to an ever present battle for our minds.
What’s the solution?  Spirit empowered and guided defense.  Our part to play in this defense is to “take captive EVERY thought and make it obedient to Christ.”  When we take every thought captive in this manner The Spirit acts as a filter and empowers us to take a righteous stand against the forces of darkness.  Indeed if EVERY thought is made obedient to Christ our minds become a very productive place and we can better love and serve Jesus and others; then with all the clutter pushed aside His will can be accomplished by, through, and in us.
Let me make this perfectly clear…Only God gets to decide which thoughts are pure and which thoughts are evil or less than productive.  Take notice…we are to take captive EVERY thought, not just the ones we deem evil or unfit.  We are NOT the filter only God is.  If we pre-decide what is good or bad we will certainly end up with thoughts that are less than His best for us. Some thoughts that we think are innocent and harmless may actually lead to more bondage and fear.  We need to remember that only HE is Holy and only HE can perfectly discern the difference between light and darkness.  Take that role upon yourself and I can guarantee that you will be less than free in your mind and life.
Now I can hear some folks objecting to this truth and saying that it is impossible to ever really take captive EVERY thought.   In the natural and the flesh you would be correct.  However, in The Spirit He has made us fully competent and up to the task.  The Holy Spirit is far faster and accurate than any micro-processor we could ever imagine.  Only in Him can we be up to such a daunting endeavor.  We have thoughts more than every second, but He has equipped us with His Spirit so that we can manage all that ever comes to our minds.  Don’t believe me?  Try Him? With Jesus all things are possible.
               Love and ….
          Kirk Out !
P.s.  I am sleeping and functioning extremely well with very few flashbacks.  The few flashbacks I am having are not a problem at all.  Thank You Jesus!  Thank you EMDR therapy!  Thank you everyone who has prayed for me!

  1. Once again I apologize for the formatting of this blog post. WordPress would not allow me to publish it with proper paragraph breaks. However, I was able to add extreme indentations to hopefully make it easier to read.

  2. love this concept. well said!

Appreciate your honesty and happy to hear you are sleeping better and therapy is helping. My mind also is often a battlefield. I have often felt as though I am the “double minded man” spoken of by James….unstable in all his ways. If I “feed” that thought, then I might very well be. If I take that thought captive and receive with meekness the word planted in me being obedient to Christ, my mind goes as you said to a productive place. I might also add that with our minds, it is not just a spiritual thing or condition. The condition of our physical bodies influences our mind greatly and simply getting enough exercise, eating healthy, and getting proper amount of rest can often do more than hours of prayer and bible study.

    • Thanks for sharing Daryl. We need to submit our body, soul and Spirit to CHirst and take good care of our entire being as we fight the good fight.

The first place for Jesus to be Lord is in our minds. We want Him to be Lord everywhere, but first things first – it starts with us. The Indwelling Christ longs to invade our mind daily to fully possess it as His humble servant. Imaginations, high things, and thoughts are obstructions to this process and are steadfastly dedicated to warring against our intimacy (gnosis – experiencial knowledge) with God. We can’t be nice soldiers in our war with these three so we forcably pull them down from their smug place, wrecking them in the process, and lead them away as prisoners to Christ to whom they must now submit. 2 Cor 10:5

    • You are right Dan,we need to be good soldiers of Christ and wage war against the flesh and outside forces of evil.

I like what you said About freeing ourselves from this work, and giving the job to the Holy Spirit….we’ll be free to love and serve Jesus and be more productive in our life w him. He wants the job…and I want him to have it! I dont know what thoughts are even good for me many times…

    • Yes Sue, right one. We must allow Jesus to be in charge of our lives and let go of the wheel.

Great lesson for all … our minds held us captive until the Holy Spirit set us free from ungodly thoughts. Draw close to God and He will draw close to you .
So powerful is God and His Holy Spirit.. through Jesus Christ, His Son . There is no other way but through our Lord Jesus. We all need his love and protection.. ❤️

Great post, it is so true that “in Christ” we can take all thoughts captive and make choices and decisions based on God’s Word and His will. I have read a book on the brain by Dr. Caroline Leaf and we are able to rewire our thought process and bring our brains into submission to God. Keep being a disciple on a daily basis, there is no other way to live with any peace other than as a disciple of Jesus.

    • It’s true James that only Jesus brings us peace and I choose to walk in it every day.

  9. Hi Christopher,

I read your post last evening and thought about it as I went to sleep, especially the portion of the verse “bring every thought into captivity.” This morning, as I was waking, I dreamed a horrible dream. All of my sexual fantasies, images from pornography and incidents in my life seemed all rolled into one dream. As I woke more, this verse came to mind. It seemed to be a struggle between the evil images and God’s voice in the verse, but eventually, His voice won out.

It seemed like the verse was both a catalyst and a cure for the past incidents. I can see how this would be very meaningful and helpful to you in your markedly worse memories. Thank you for sharing.

    Blessings,

    Win

    • Wow Win, thanks for sharing your dream. The Spirit and the flesh are competing for our attention as they war against each other in our very being. I am overjoyed with the fact that the Spirit of Christ ultimately wins.
