The Yoke’s On Me

October 26, 2014

Jesus said:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11: 28-30

This is one of my favorite passages in all of scripture.  Here Jesus calls anyone who is struggling to simply come to Him and then find rest.  This message is so comforting because we all struggle at times and desperately need to find a place of comfort and rest so that we can just recharge and face another day of challenges.

However, the way Jesus wants us to find this rest is very unique.  In fact it is a total contradiction.  In order to find the rest that Jesus wants us to have He invites us to take His yoke upon us.  In the world yokes are meant for oxen or other beasts of burden, so that they can be controlled better while carrying very heavy loads.  Yet the yoke Jesus suggests for us is one that is not burdensome at all, in fact it is easy and light.

Jesus wants us yoked with Him so that we can learn directly from Him how to better navigate the path He sets before us in this life.  Yokes are usually made for two animals so that they can pull in tandem, side by side.  Here I believe Jesus is suggesting to us that we should allow His Spirit to be yoked with us.  This makes perfect sense because The Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, is literally “The One called alongside us”.  Why would we ever go it alone in this life when God has fully provided a better way for us.  A way to do it with HIM, instead of all on our own.

Jesus clearly wants us in His yoke so that we can learn directly from Him.  However, far too many of us are yoked with something or someone else altogether.  Yoke with the church and it will fail you. Yoke with a Pastor and they will fail you.  Even yoke with the bible and it will fail you.  Jesus and His Spirit are the only ones who really fit into the yoke with you.  So if you want to learn directly from The One who is gentle and humble in heart, Jesus Himself, then step right up and take His yoke upon you.  This is THE way Jesus wants us to learn.  Sermons get you no where.  The bible only gets you part way.  Same goes for commentaries or other written works of men.  Sure secondary revelation can help at times, but there is nothing like direct teaching and revelation from The One called right alongside us.

Why read a book when you can actually experience Truth in Love?  Why settle for a postcard when you can actually take the trip for yourself?  We all have plenty of questions, but ONLY HE has answers.

Love and…..

P.s. Please be praying for Janet’s Mom, Ann?  She found out yesterday that she has inoperable cancer.  She loves and follows Jesus, but the whole family needs prayer right now.  Hospice care will start soon.

Any worldly yoke is not easy and is hard. God’s yoke is trust for God to take care of us as we go here in this world doing what we are called to do, without fighting in flesh fights of minds

Being taught the art of fighting without fighting, got that from a Bruce lee Movie. “Enter the dragon”

Beautiful, and I’m just thinking about the statement ” sermons are useless, “and books and commentaries. I have been blessed by sermons and books, but maybe you mean unless the spirit of Christ is there they are useless?

Thank you for the prayer request and prayers. It will be a rough road but I am hoping to see some growth where the locusts have eaten in the area of a family relationship. God is good, all the time!

    • Yes Janet, what I mean is that sermons and such pale in comparison with direct revelation from the Spirit.

      • To further clarify…The Voice of the Spirit trumps all other forms of revelation. However, at times we can certainly hear HIs Voice through others even via (Gak) sermons and books. If HE can use Balaam’s ass everything is in play.

Loved the encouragement from Gods word – I also love that scripture from Jesus and I feel he is 100% right in all he tells us ….it’s so hard to leave our anxieties of this world ( or so we think it is ) and become yoked with Jesus ..when in reality He picks us up and carries us thru the hardest parts . I know he did for me when my mother passed away….and a few other times. He never leaves us or forsakes us …sometimes we leave him for awhile but this world is going down and we see all the devils work so back to the only place to go …is with Jesus. Pr 3:4,5,6 Trust in The Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding ….why should we worry or fret or give up .. (because we are human and imperfect) so dust ourselves off and pick up our torture stake and follow Him. He’s got this !!

  5. For far to many of us our yoke with Jesus is “over easy.”

Wonderful timely message. Also like the realization that being yoked with Him means that you can’t stray too far, He will guide, assist, labor with, bear my burden, walk with me not ahead of me. He paces himself with me so that He can bring me to His understanding. Seeing so much more here today in this scripture than I ever have before. May I ask you Steve what you are meaning when you stated … For far to many of us our yoke with Jesus is “over easy.” I’m failing to see how that is when I am “yoked” with Him. To me it’s an impossibility because we are sharing everything together. Thoughts? Blessings

So loved this. I’ve loved these verses for a long time but never thought about it being in the context of ‘along side’….of course you walk side by side when yoked with someone! And, Ramma, how beautiful is what you say about this keeps us from straying very far…, what a thought! This is my experience. My flesh sure doesn’t find it an ‘over easy’ experience but my spirit and soul find precious, needed rest and strength and insight. Love,, “BK”
