Peers, Nothing More And Nothing Less

July 30, 2014

Greetings,

Jesus said:

“But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi’ for you have only one Master and you are all brothers.  And do not call anyone on earth ‘father’, for you have one Father, and He is in heaven.  Nor are you to be called ‘teacher’, for you have one Teacher, The Christ.  The greatest among you will be your servant.  For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”  Matthew 23: 8-12

Jesus spells it out very clearly that no one should have a position or title that places them over and above other Christ followers.  The fact is that we are all siblings and we should honor Him and one another by living and acting that way whenever we interact and share.  There should never be such a system that ranks some believers above other believers.  We should call no one Pastor, Teacher or Leader.  It is also true that we should not treat anyone with more respect and honor than others.  Even if we do not use titles or positions we should always remember that we are all sisters and brothers and that “favoritism is forbidden.”

Jesus made it very clear that only God Himself is to be followed and revered.  We have been freely given The Holy Spirit to guide and lead us into ALL truth, and we do not need that ANY human to teach us the ways of God.  We have all been given the anointing and all we need is HIM and no other man’s teaching to be fully equipped for any good work.  (1 John 2)

HIS anointing flows through all of His followers and as peers in Christ He can speak through each one of us in turn in order to get His message out to the body and the world.  No person should ever be elevated to a status over and above being our peer in Christ.  Along the way He will speak through various members of His body and we can all learn the truth in love from one another as HE sees fit.

Any church system that uses a hierarchy and places some over and above others is antichrist.  Because that system goes totally against what Jesus taught.  According to Jesus we are all equal peers, sisters and brothers under only Him and NO other including Pastor, Elder, Apostle or Pope.  If we say we are followers of Jesus then we should really BE followers of Jesus and absolutely no one else.

Love and …..

Kirk Out !

I completely agree with you, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on Ephesians 4:11, where Paul says “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ”? It seems like these words are at least loosely supportive on the church system that we have in place, today.

What Eph. 4:11 describes are functions within the body of Christ, not offices with which to staff a religious system. There are also at least 2 other places in the NT where Paul lists gifts and functions in the body (1 Cor. 12 and Rom. 12 come to mind), and there is overlap as well as differences in those lists with each other and with the the one in Eph. 4. I don’t believe that any of those lists include all the gifts/functions through which the Spirit might express the fullness of Christ.

  2. And yes what about all things work towards the good, for aren’t their believers and non believers everywhere. And is there anywhere that Christ spoke against those that were not sincere that used the name of Christ? I mean did he not say to his disciples to leave them alone those that preach his name?

  3. Catherine gave a great answer 2trak and I agree with her. In a fully functioning church there are many different gifts that honor God and serve the Body. I feel that every follower of Christ has Spirit given gifts, but those gifts always operate and serve from within and among the Body and never from a position ABOVE others. Regardless of our gifting we are all still equal peer siblings in Christ.

some day this will all be hashed out, and we will all be utterly overwhelmed by the glory of Christ, Who is in our midst, sending out nerve impulses, so to speak, to quicken and direct each and every member. Every function of all the members will vividly display God’s thought, which will eclipse anything man, in himself, has come up with.

Wow, Bill, you said that so well. I do agree with the level playing field, Christ himself made the ground at the foot of the cross level, equal for every human being from his day forward. As Chris reminded us that we each one have everything we need to make it. As you reminded us, one day it will all be hashed out and made clear. The other day my thoughts were that we are all being taught on different levels or stages, we will end up in the same place, for some of us we have to go through a certain method of teaching to get the understanding that He wants us to have. Why it is that way, I don’t know, but He eventually gets us to the place He wants us to be. Blessings

Playing ‘catch-up’ again as we travel. I don’t think Christopher would mind if I insert here that Ken & I are traveling for the rest of summer, not sure how long….it’s just kind of ‘unfolding’. We are presently in upstate New York; will then be heading to Massachusetts, down the eastern seaboard to Florida; connecting with Christopher in Georgia and Tennessee; Texas, Utah, California and then home to Washington State. If anyone here is interested in face to facing along the way (even as much as a cup of coffee or tea in a public place) please email me at kenzsbk@yahoo.com and we’ll see if it can work!
Having said that, let me say I have enjoyed this thread very much. Amen to the manifestations mentioned in Ephesians 4. Not a select few, but how the ALL function as the Spirit so leads. Today a shepherd, tomorrow in teaching, the next planting, etc etc. Not one ‘gift and title for all time’! Love, “BK”

Loved our “face-to-face,” and can’t wait for our next time together with both you and Ken…and Chris, of course!
