I Follow A Person, Not A Book

May 7, 2014

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  Matthew 28: 18-20

Jesus said, “You are witnesses of these things.  I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”  Luke 24: 48-49

Recently while reading my bible ( Yes I do this often regardless of anything others might think) and these two passages really spoke to me.  Please notice that ALL AUTHORITY has been given to Jesus.  If this is true, which it is, the bible has absolutely NO authority of its own.  This is funny (funny SAD, not funny ha ha) because most Christians and “churches” out there say that the bible is their Sole Authority in life and in matters of faith and practice.  Most look to the book to find their answers, when they really should be looking directly to Jesus for any and all guidance and answers.  To look to the book first and foremost denies Jesus of His rightful place as our sole Authority, Guide and Lord.

Now having said that I will also fully acknowledge that Jesus and His Spirit will often times lead us to the bible for guidance and answers.  But the book itself without the illumination of Jesus and the Holy Spirit has absolutely no value or authority in anyone’s life; other than value as a piece of historical literature.  If you want to speak with authority speak only with the words that Jesus gives you at any given moment in life. Quoting scriptures at people devoid of Christ and Spirit does no one any good at any moment.

Jesus is the SOLE AUTHORITY in the life of a Christ follower and He uses the Holy Spirit to empower us to live a life worthy of the calling we have received.  Jesus via the Spirit can grant us all the power, authority and influence we need to live life to its fullest while serving Him and others along the way.  The true great treasure is found within us, not between the pages of some Holy book.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the bible and HE leads me to read it almost every day.  But I do so understanding that true Life and Light come only from Him and no other source.  We are truly not to go anywhere or do anything unless we do so with the Spirit’s leading and empowerment.  We should do absolutely nothing in our own strength, power or leading.  Jesus is The Word of God and we should seek to serve and follow only Him.  I follow a Person, not a book.  However, He may speak to me in any manner He desires…including from the well worn pages.

Love and……

Wow! Bro, you are using the truth of Scripture to try and refute the truth of Scripture. Quoting “All authority has been given unto Me” from Scripture to say that Scripture is has no authority and all of it resides only in Jesus is a kingdom divided against itself. This is very strange to me. There is no need to diminish Scripture to exalt the Lord. He inspired it and is Himself the word that He inspires. He is the Word speaking and inspiring the word…written or otherwise. If what we believe or think we hear from the Spirit of the Lord has no backdrop. so to speak, to be comfirmed with, how would we know what is or is not of God or a deceiving spirit. “God told me” has to have something behind it more than just “God told me”. Otherwise confusion reigns. How do we know we are really hearing from the Word if it doesn’t line up with the word?….Just my thoughts here. Perhaps you need to rethink some of your statements. They have truth in them and yet you juxtal-position them against other truths…Beam me up Scotty…Phasers on stun…

  2. Johnny, I don’t think you are really grasping what I am trying to convey. I do not wish to refute the truth of scripture. I just place Jesus where HE rightfully belongs because HE is actually The Truth. ALL THINGS including scripture are under HIS Authority. I am not diminishing the bible I am just exalting Christ over and above ALL things including the written Word. After all Jesus did not tell us that HE would send a book to lead us into all truth, HE said He would send HIs Spirit to be our one and only true and faithful guide. Jesus is the summation of all things and HE requires no back drop in order to reveal His truth in love. As it is written “My sheep HEAR my Voice and obey” Notice HE did not say we would read a book and obey. Thanks for sharing Johnny.

To preach the Bible as “the handbook for life,” or as the answer to every question, rather than as the revelation of Christ, is to turn the Bible into an entirely different book. This is how the Pharisees approached Scripture, however, as we can see clearly from the questions they asked Jesus, all of them amounting to something akin to Trivial Pursuits: “What happens if a person divorces and remarries?” “Why do your disciples pick grain on the Sabbath?” “Who sinned-this man or his parents-that he was born blind?” For the Pharisees, the Scriptures were a source of trivia for life’s dilemmas. To be sure, Scripture provides God-centered and divinely revealed wisdom for life, but if this were its primary objective, Christianity would be a religion of self-improvement by following examples and exhortations, not a religion of the Cross. This is Paul’s point with the Corinthians, whose obsession with wisdom and miracles had obscured the true wisdom and the greatest miracle of all. And what is that? Paul replies, “He has been made for us our righteousness, holiness and redemption” (1 Cor 1:28-31). The Bible IS the revelation of Christ, from its begining to end. That is it’s true purpose…to reveal by, with, through, and in accordance with the Spirit…The Lord bless all who love Him and His word…To go where no man has gone before…Engage warp drive….

  4. Well said Johnny T.

And what about the books which were not placed in the canon…and what about the books which were placed in canon, but are still in question…..where does this leave us except following the person and not the book…think about it…
