The Joy Of Simply Being

February 24, 2014

Jesus said:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11: 28

The older I get the more I appreciate the rest and times of pause that the Lord grants us.  I need to be reminded at times to just slow down and enjoy His presence.  The world and the traditional “church” system is always pushing us to go, go, go, and do, do, do.  If we live at the pace that the world pushes on us it can be exhausting and burdensome.  Jesus wants us to slow down and simply BE the church, instead of always having to DO church-like things.

True Spirituality is about BEING in Christ and not about DOING things in Christ’s name.  We need to rest in Him and not be concerned about building ANYthing for Him.  There is no such thing as Kingdom building in the true church.  The Lord’s Kingdom already is built and prepared by Him and nothing we can DO can add to that fact.  We just need to enter into His rest and bear fruit by BEING in Him and not try to manufacture fruit by DOING things for Him.  True fruit is borne and it nourishes, while wax fruit is MANufactured, tastes bad and has no nutritional value.

Jesus applies zero pressure upon us to perform and make things happen.  No, we are to abide in Him, and by simply BEING in Him true fruit of the Spirit will be born through us.  Trying to make things, even Godly things, happen is counter-productive.

Did you ever notice how often the word “Selah” occurs in the Psalms?  It is in there a lot, and it means to pause, be refreshed and reflect.  It is about BEING still and knowing HE is God.  After all He created us to BE human Beings and NOT human’s doing.  HE who began a good work in us will complete it.  It is not about us DOING anything except surrendering and allowing Jesus to do good things in and through us.  ”The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it.”

Tomorrow I am going to hang out and chill with some other like minded believers.  I have no agenda whatsoever and I do not know what I am going to say or do when we gather.  I trust that Christ in me will take care of all that, and it should be that way in all of my life’s interactions. There is no need to stress and prepare whatever words or actions I may bring to any gathering or situation.  If I surrender to and abide in Him, His truth in love will just flow through me and accomplish whatever He intends to accomplish.  It is not my role or job to DO anything, except BE in The Spirit at all times.  Like my tee-shirts say, “Don’t Go To Church…BE The Church !”  We all need to stop striving and start BEING.  At least that is what is on my heart and mind today.

Love and…..

  1. I heard this sister one time talking about how God taught her about abiding in Christ as a branch does in the vine and bearing HIS fruit. She said she was walking through an orange grove and heard this orange tree groaning. She asked the tree what it was doing and it said, “I am trying to have an orange!” Whether this really happened I know not, but it sure got the point across.

    • Awesome, Michael, great analogy. I can’t ever imagine a branch groaning to produce any fruit. For when being in as a part of the tree, the tree itself does the producing, and the branch is at rest for this to happen whenever it is to happen. The branch at rest just bearing the fruit.
So I see to just bloom wherever we are planted and God takes care of us as a branch is taken care of on a tree.

  2. Thanks for that Kirk, remembering to be available to be used by God whenever God sees fit to use me. Learning daily to be dead to flesh efforts and alive to God’s being, resting in his finished work for me and all the world

Just like a water glass to me I am the Master of the water glass, it was created to give me drink whenever I decide to use it to get drink
The same is truly what man was created for to serve God, be as a water glass to God
Thanks for this post, I needed the reminder, it is all God and none of me, I am nothing more that a water glass for God to use as God sees to use. Thank you for that reminder

this is interesting cuz just this morning I was pondering the stewardship of the mystery which had been entrusted to Paul, and just Who it was that was doing the ministering. This is from the first chapter of Colossians….PLEASE NOTE THE LAST VERSE!!!

24 I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, 26 the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. 27 To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. 29 To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.

  4. “God is both Act and Being, and the act and being of God are found in Christ. He is God’s Act and God’s Being. Its a royal mistake to separate the two.” (“Jesus Manifesto,” Leonard Sweet and Frank Viola).

Chris, great reminder again. When I stood away from the organized religous cult that i found myself in, I had been so involved in the “doing” of servant hood and not the living of it. I found that when I lived what Jesus taught me and the Holy Spirit quickened to my heart and mind, I no longer felt like I was doing to be accepted or a part of anything. But, in the begginning i felt like I was having extreme withdrawals and it hurt deeply. But, I just knew that I could not return to that kind of manipulation, etc. So, I stood on the faith that Jesus put in me. Praise Him for the freedom and love in him. When we live it, the ministering happens spontaneously, anywhere at any time. Some people think that they have to have more control over it and they are only controling man and doing nothing for God at all. Blind leaders of the blind. It is so simple that it is hidden from the wise and prudent and revealed unto babes. Blessings to all.

When I was still ‘a’ pastor within the walls of religion I noticed the verse in Psalms one day that says “except the Lord build the house they that labor, labor in vain; except the the Lord keep the city the watchman waketh but in vain….”. I started to weep, realizing it isn’t MY church or MY city nor is it my job to ‘keep’ it or ‘build’ it. What a RELIEF! And now, farther along the road I realize even more life is on the outside of the wall of religion….outside ‘the camp’. Great stuff, Chris, thanks. “BK”
