There Is No Get Out Of Jail Free Card

November 8, 2013

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11: 28-30

My time with Matthew M. at the jail yesterday was amazing, but getting in to see him was not easy.  It took me 25 minutes to get through the security check because I, “looked more like a convict than a minister.”  I said thank you, “I appreciate that more than you could ever know.”  I guess they don’t get many long haired Jesus freaks in shorts and flip flop sandals there.  They finally let me in because I did not have any outstanding warrants or tickets, but the guards were not pleased at all.  I found out later that they called the chaplain and he had to vouch for me before they would let me in.  Good thing that I have known him for over 20 years.

Next I was escorted into the visiting cubicle to wait for Matthew.  A few minutes later when he arrived… it was obvious to me that many people had been praying for this young man and that because of this; the Holy Spirit was all over Matthew like white on rice.  A thick slab of safety glass separated us and we had to communicate via phone, but I could sense a Holy presence in our midst and I felt totally free to say whatever needed to be said to Matthew in this situation.

Matthew was in tears as he shared, but his biggest worry was not about his situation at all.  He was worried about his dead brother’s condition because he had been told by several Pastors and other “church” going friends that Ryan was now in hell because he had committed the “unforgivable sin” of suicide last year.  I told Matthew that what they had told him was total bullshit and that God was far more full of grace, mercy and love than those people gave Him credit for.  I then reminded Matthew that Ryan had accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior in my office when he was 14 years old and that I had spoken with Ryan a few weeks before his untimely death and Ryan confirmed to me that he was still following Jesus as best as he could. Matthew received my testimony as being true and trustworthy, and it was plain to see that a major care and burden had been lifted from him at that very moment.  He then said, “So God is not a vengeful dick who punishes everyone with eternal torment and hell fire?”  I just said, “That’s not the Jesus that I know and love…. and hell may play a role in some people’s lives, but I don’t fully understand the afterlife.  However, I do know beyond the shadow of any doubt that God’s grace, mercy and love is far deeper and wider than what anyone could ever imagine”.

Next I looked right into Matthew’s eyes and asked him what he wanted to do about this Jesus who forgives sins and offers such abundant grace, mercy and love?  He said, ” I need Jesus because I have no peace whatsoever in my life.”  He then asked me to pray for him and I told him that he needed to talk directly to Jesus for himself in his very own words.  A few minutes later he asked Jesus to take charge of his life and called Him Lord and Savior.  Then we both cried with joy.

Right then the guard told us we had five more minutes left in this visitation.  I encouraged Matthew to pray often and to lean on Jesus at all times.  I told him that in the eyes of God he was a totally set free new creation, but that the state of Michigan was not going to drop any charges because of that fact.  He knows he has a difficult road in front of him, but also understands that Jesus will help him through that now.  I told him I loved him and would see him again soon.  He returned the love, thanked me for coming to see him and then our time together was done.  The hour flew by very quickly.  The Holy Spirit really granted us the freedom to share deeply.  This was not your typical “Jail House conversion.”  Please continue to pray for Matthew?  He has two court dates next week.

Love and…..
